Session Caps vs Weekly Caps
A cap on one sitting and a cap on the week do different jobs. You need both, or the missing one expands.
A single limit is easier to remember and easier to outgrow. A session cap stops one sitting from expanding. A weekly cap stops a series of legal sittings from adding up to more than the month can stand. They fail in different ways. Using only the one that feels stricter this evening is how the other one quietly disappears.
What a session cap is for
The session cap is the amount and the time for this sitting. When either is reached, you leave, including when you are ahead and tempted to reinvest. It is the tool for the next two hours. It says nothing about Thursday. People who are disciplined inside a room and undisciplined about how often they open the door need a second number.
Time limits and breaks are the clock half of the session. The money half should be just as blunt. Both halves end the sitting. Neither half audits the week.
What a weekly cap is for
The weekly cap is the total you may put at risk across all sittings in seven days. Three small sessions can pass every session cap and still break the week. That pattern feels responsible because each night looked small. The week is the unit your other bills actually live on. Match the cap to that unit.
Write the week down where the sessions cannot edit it. A note that says 80 for the week, 30 for any one night, is clear. After two nights of 30, the third night's cap is 20, not 30. The session cap shrinks to whatever the week has left. If the week has nothing left, there is no session, however well you would have behaved inside one.
How people pit them against each other
I stayed inside the night's limit becomes a defense of a fifth night. I am under the weekly number becomes a defense of one enormous sitting. Both sentences can be true and still be incomplete. The rule is the stricter of the two at the moment you decide. A pre-session checklist should ask about the week, not only about the cash in your pocket tonight.
Reset the week on a stated day, and do not borrow from next week. Borrowing is how a monthly total loses its meaning. If a week was expensive, the next week does not grow to heal it. Healing by raising the cap is a chase spread over a calendar.
A record that takes one line a day
Each day you either write zero or write the amount risked. Seven numbers, added once. If you will not write the zero on the days you skipped, you will invent those days later as evidence of restraint. The zeros are part of the evidence. Questions after a session can sit on top of this strip without replacing it.
If the strip regularly breaks, the right change is a lower weekly number or a week with no sessions, not a more complicated formula. Formulae are where bargaining hides.
Keep the caps inside the law
Caps are for legal, adult play. They are not a way to portion out an illegal offer or a minor's access. If the activity is not allowed, both caps are zero. If it is allowed, the two caps together are what keep a hobby from becoming a silent bill.
Frequently asked questions
Is a strict session cap enough?
Not if you can open a new session every night. The week needs its own total, and the session cap shrinks when the week is nearly used up.
Can I roll unused money into the next week?
A stated plan can allow it, but borrowing from the future because this week went badly is a chase. Unused room is not a debt the next week owes you.
What if one night would use the whole week?
Then that night's session cap is the weekly remainder, not your usual nightly number. The lower figure wins.
